Education Programs

Adult Education

Adult Christian Education is under the direction of both Clergy & trained Lay ministers. During non-COVID times a weekly series was held on Sunday morning from 9:30 - 10:15am between the two Sunday Services. Topics range from a single topic on one Sunday and others may span a number of weeks. The topics are edifying, provocative and holy.

During COVID, we held an online ZOOM meeting from 9:30-10:15 on Sundays. This ended when the clergy in charge retired from Grace. At the request of the Vestry, Lay leader Susan Cooper continued a ZOOM class in that time slot called Christian Adult Education Community (CAEC). This series was successful and will continue in the fall on a Saturday Morning Zoom. At this time CAEC will start in October.

Returning in the Fall

It is our hope that things will return to normal in the fall. Due to the current protocols in Nevada and the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada, we are taking this one day at a time.

Godly Play

Godly Play Children have an innate sense of the presence of God. The Godly Play approach helps them to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience though wonder and play. Based on Montessori principles and developed using a spiral curriculum, the Godly Play method serves children through early, middle and late childhood and beyond. The tools for this program were created by Duane Schaefer, former parishioner and skilled craftsman.

Sunday School

Teachers gather the kids from Church after the beginning service and follow the Crucifer to the Parish Hall. Teachers are alerted by an usher when the Peace begins in the church and they accompany the children back to church.

Grace in the Desert offers Nursery School to infants up to the age of four (4) and Sunday School for the following age groups:

  • Age five(5) to 2nd grade: (Held outside the Parish Hall Nursery)
  • 3rd grade to 5th grade: (Parish Hall Conference Room)
  • Youth group: 6th grade to 12th grade (Parish Hall )

The Sunday School classes are taught by teams of two people that are licensed by the Diocese.

The Youth Group class is taught at a table in the Parish Hall dining area.

Grace Nursery

The Nursery is a spacious and safe area that is always covered by two people that are licensed by the Diocese. It is open at 10:15am to assure that parents can attend the 10:30am Service.

Vacation Bible School

Prior to the pandemic, Grace in the Desert offered a week-long Vacation Bible School (VBS) each summer for children age 4 through 5th grade. All children are welcome. The curriculum is non-denominational. Specific questions can be directed to Tee Gammon , Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator, 702-838-4444 extension 4248.

During the pandemic, there was no 2020 Vacation Bible School. Thankfully, in 2021 we offered an abbreviated version called Roar from Thursday, July 29- Saturday July 31. Eleven energetic children played, prayed and sang – learning that Life is Wild, but God is Good.
